Prison Reorganization in Rosario After Riot

The provincial government of Santa Fe has carried out the transfer of 120 inmates from Unit 11 in Piñero to other prisons over the past weekend. The main objective of this action is the reorganization of the penitentiary system to improve security and police operability. According to authorities, the distribution of the inmates was carried out considering criteria such as dangerousness, sentence length, and progressiveness.

In response to events that occurred at the Tenth Police Station in Rosario, where there were escape attempts, the decision was made to relocate these 120 inmates. The government of Santa Fe stated that this measure aims to optimize penitentiary management, strengthen security, and ensure greater control over the prison population. Inmates under federal jurisdiction were transferred to the Coronda Unit, while the others were relocated to higher-security sectors within Unit 11 in Piñero.

Regarding the events at the Tenth Police Station in Rosario, there was an escape attempt by five inmates, who were recaptured, while a sixth managed to escape amid a riot led by detainees due to the precarious conditions they are in. The detainees who remained at the police station initiated a riot demanding better conditions and denouncing overcrowding in the facility.

This relocation of inmates from the Piñero prison to other penitentiary units is due to the need to manage the intake of new inmates coming from police stations in the province of Santa Fe. Currently, the capacity of the Piñero prison is 20 people, but it houses a total of 53 inmates, which has led to measures being taken to prioritize the safety and well-being of the inmates.
